Some of you might be thinking, “KeeperAtHome, that’s an odd handle…” When I was debating about what name I wanted to represent me as I write for Families, the Lord laid Titus 2:5 on my heart. It exhorts young women to be, “…discreet, chaste, keepers at home…” Also, in Titus 5:14 the Bible says, “I will therefore that the younger women…guide the house…”
From before I was married until my son was nine months old I worked in the professional world. I had a supervisory position in a health care facility for individuals with developmental disabilities. I found my job very rewarding professionally as well as financially. However, one area of my life was suffering: my marriage. My husband and I worked opposite shifts so that one of us would always be with our son. The result was that we didn’t see each other nearly often enough and when we did we found we had nothing to talk about. Before we were married I had always wanted to be a stay-at-home-mom. However, I got very attached to the money and influence which I was accumulating through my job. After much prayer and thoughtful conversation with my husband, we decided that we would step out on faith financially and that I would quit my job.
Since that time, over two years ago now, I have endeavored to be a “keeper at home”. I try my best to use my time thoughtfully and wisely as I raise my two wonderful children. I work to make my home a place where my husband lives, but also a place he looks forward to coming at the end of the day.
I realize this arrangement does not work for everyone. There are many women who work part or full-time jobs in order to meet the needs of their family or to satisfy their ambitions and I am very supportive of this. Each one of us can only respond to what God has asked us as individuals to do.
So, as I begin writing for families, I intend to write meaningful, thought-provoking articles that will not only encourage and inform the reader, but also inspire each person to be more and do more for God.
