Who Makes a School Run Well? Part Three: Cafeteria Workers

If you have been reading my blog series about who helps make a school run, you will have previously read about school custodians and administrative assistants. Today, I want to write about another great group of people who really do help make a school run well: Cafeteria workers. Seriously, what would a school do without those wonderful people who feed our children? I am assuming that students of all ages would starve without them!

Let’s talk about all that cafeteria workers do for schools. First, school cafeteria workers come to work insanely early in the morning to start preparing breakfast and lunch for students that day. These workers prepare healthy breakfasts, start preparing lunch and getting the cafeteria ready for the day.

They clean food, cook food, pick up food, go through lunch information and are interacting with the main office staff as to who needs more money in their lunch accounts and who may need to be contacted about certain cafeteria issues. These workers aren’t just about serving food; these workers do so much more.

Add all of the above to some new technology that are allowing school cafeteria’s to be connected to the Internet so that parents may monitor what they do want and what they don’t want their children to eat, cafeteria workers have a whole slew of responsibilities throughout their time at school. Plus, they must also fit in a very short amount of time to take a break and eat something before the cafeteria becomes the chaos that is lunch!

School cafeteria workers interact with students throughout the morning during breakfast and throughout the late morning to mid-afternoon during lunch. Kids get to know these workers faces and students develop relationships with some of these workers. Cafeteria workers are not only people who feed our children while they are at school, they are also people who genuinely care about the students they feed.

Let’s give our school cafeteria workers a hand. They deserve it!
