Who Needs a Handyman?

When I became a single parent I quickly learned just how many things I didn’t know how to fix around the house. I’ve had to call my dad far too many times to come and rescue me from my lack of handiness around the house. In less than two years we’ve gone through three DVD players simply because I didn’t know how to fix them. I’ve been stranded in the middle of the highway on more than one occasion and had to call my poor father to save me yet again because frankly beyond putting gas in it I know absolutely nothing about cars. These were all things that I left up to my ex-husband, I never expected to have to know how to do any of these things on my own.

I still am no expert, but I have learned that I no longer need a handyman for everything. Thanks to the internet you can fix just about anything on your own these days. Youtube is chalked full of “how-to” videos for just about everything. Want to know how to change the oil on your car? Just look it up. Fix a leaky faucet? That’s on there too.

As a single parent, let the internet be your friend. You can’t possibly know how to fix everything, but with a few how-to tutorials you can usually figure things out without having to spend all that money on having someone else do it for you. Forget those stereotypical gender roles. You have the opportunity to show those kids of yours that nothing is off limits. Women are just as capable as men to fix things around the house and men can cook and clean just as well as women. Get your kids in on the action. Someday they are going to need to learn how to fix things too, might as well get them started now!
