Last week I griped about how I’m married to a Scrooge and lamented how I’m responsible for making Christmas happen at our house every year by myself.
I guess I was feeling sorry for myself when I wrote those because I was stressed. Most of the time everything’s done by now. Decorations have been hung, gifts have been ordered, and this week cards would have been mailed.
But I got sick at Thanksgiving, right when Wayne started his three week sabbatical between jobs so we could travel and spend some time together. So instead of doing Christmas I’ve been either on the road, in bed, or in some cases both.
However, last night as I frantically tried to get gifts ordered, I realized something important: shopping’s one of my easier tasks. Thanks to catalogs and the Internet.
I may not have had the time to place all my orders before now, but I did have a chance to shop catalogs and note which things would make great gifts for which people. And that’s really half the battle right there…the picking and choosing. The buying is easy.
And no hassle. I don’t have to deal with stores, parking lots, long lines at the checkout counters, or the post office. I simply point and click and it’s done.
Most important, I don’t have to drag Wayne with me and get his opinion on if he thinks this would make a nice gift for his grandma or if his aunt would like that. In most cases, since we’ve been together so long now, I have a pretty good idea of what tickles his family’s fancy. Even if I’m not sure, I simply show him the catalog and he can give me an instantaneous thumbs up or thumbs down. No muss or fuss for either of us!
I’ve been doing this for years now and will continue to do so, in part because it does work so darn well. Those catalogs may clog my mailbox but they also contain gift ideas that save me time and energy.
So who needs a husband’s help shopping when there are catalogs and the Internet? Not me!
