I talk a lot about setting goals when it comes to fitness, in both your diet and your exercise. But sometimes we set goals and we don’t really think about why we have those goals. The “who, what, where and why” are important when it comes to goal setting.
For instance, let’s say you decided at the beginning of the year that you want to lose 50 pounds. “Who” do you want to lose it for? This is really important because when it’s for someone other than yourself you are not likely to succeed. It has to come from deep within and you have to love yourself enough to want to do it. When you are doing it for the wrong reasons (or the wrong person) it doesn’t have as much impact.
Now the “what”…what will you do to lose the 50 pounds? I mean, sure, we can all say that we want to lose weight but how do you plan to do that? You have to then set some measurable goals such as exercise three days a week, cut out all sugar, stop eating snacks and so on.
The “where” of this equation is, where could you go wrong in attempting to lose 50 pounds? This is very important to think about because there will always be obstacles that stand in the way. You need to plan for this ahead of time. For instance, let’s just say every Friday night you go out to dinner with your family. That could be the “where” something can go wrong. So then you make a concerted effort to plan ahead. You look up the menu online and determine ahead of time what you will eat.
The “why” of this is pretty similar to the “who.” But see, some people want to lose weight not because of someone else, but because of something else. For instance, they are going to stand up in a wedding or they want to look better than their best friend. These are really the motivations behind our desire to lose weight and provide a pretty good indicator as to whether or not we will be successful.
So for each of the goals you may have set for this year, go back over them and start thinking about the “who, what, where and why.” Make sure your priorities are straight and in order.
