Yesterday, I was talking about Whole Foods Market and its stance on sustainability. I don’t know if you have one in your city, but there is one in Memphis right down the street from me and it is always jam packed. I think the idea of eating healthier and supporting a grocery store that seems to be concerned about society and the environment is very appealing to many people today.
Here’s a few more of Whole Food Markets’ policies,
Respect For All Forms Of Life
Whole Foods Market is against the senseless killing of any animal or cruelty to those raised for consumption. They encourage both meat and poultry companies they work with to develop more humane methods of production because it believes all forms of life deserve respect.
It also helps educate consumers on what type of animal cruelty goes on with certain product testing.
Education and Public Participation
Which leads us to its next policy – education and public participation. Do you ever go in the grocery store and feel like it really cares about you? You might when you go into Whole Foods Market (I did). Stores have Take Action Centers that provide consumer information about issues such as genetic engineering, pesticides, organic agriculture, and sustainability. The information may include legislation pertaining to such issues. If you shop with kids and don’t really have time to stop at the Take Action Center, that’s okay – Whole Foods Market puts the info on their web page, so you can read it at home when the youngins go to bed.
Regulation, Enforcement and Accountability
The final Whole Foods Market policy is on regulations, enforcement, and accountability. Through the National Organic Standards Board, Whole Foods Market is helping define and enforce sustainability legislation. It strives to seek both answers as well as accountability from both elected and non-elected officials (gasp!).
Whole Foods Market is also the only retailer to participate in the EPA/USDA Tolerance Reassessment Advisory Committee, which helps those agencies do a fair reassessment of pesticides and their effects on babies and children.
Hopefully, this let you know a little bit more about Whole Foods Market and its policies.
