There is nothing worse than pulling a stack of photographs out of a container and seeing that the photographs are damaged or fading. Photographs are extremely fragile, and must be handled with extreme care if you want them preserved for future generations.
There are plenty of reasons why your photographs could be deteriorating, however there are three main (and extremely common) factors that contribute to this.
Poor Storage and Conditions
Obviously as I have discussed in other articles, poor storage is the quickest way to damage your photographs. It is imperative that you take a little time to ensure that you have your photographic prints stored properly. And that they are safe and free from acid contained within these storage methods.
Improper Handling
This is another one of those things that I have discussed. But it is the leading cause of damage, along with rough handling which fall under the same category. It is extremely easy to tear or crease a photograph and if you are being careless in your handling of photographs it is going to have an adverse effect on the future of said photographs. All it takes is a little knowledge and care and you can really ensure the longevity of these precious memories.
Environmental Conditions
This is one of those factors that many people forget or do not take into consideration in storing photographs. Extreme heat – bad. Extreme cold – bad. Moisture? Really, really bad! Bugs, moths, mice, rats while not environmental still a part of mother nature and BAD. Extreme light is bad. Pay attention to where and how you are storing your photographs to avoid negative environmental conditions.
There are a lot of other factors that contribute to damage to your photographs, but these seem to be the most common, as well as the most avoidable. Just arming yourself with a little knowledge and taking a little extra time and care in working with your photographs can really add to the longevity of your memories.
