Why Cash Strapped Families Should Vacation in Canada this Summer

Who says the only way you can get your hands on a spectacular summer travel deal is to travel down south? On the contrary, Canada is just as eager to lure travelers to their neck of the woods while the temperatures are mild. To get families to visit the sprawling region numerous local lodgings are offering outstanding summer travel bargains. Take a look:

Prince Edward Island

The popular island is helping travelers celebrate a major milestone this summer—the 100th anniversary of “Anne of Green Gables.” You and your family can join in the festivities by booking a room at Kindred Spirits Country Inn. The lodging is offering a special package, which includes two nights’ accommodations and breakfast daily, plus passes to five historical sites (including the birthplace of author L.M. Montgomery), tickets to “Anne of Green Gables — The Musical” and “Anne & Gilbert — The Musical,” a carriage ride, the book, a hat just like Anne’s, and ice cream. Rates start at $254 per room per night.

In addition to the inn’s package deal, the island is also planning a special celebration for the anniversary — a brand new venue, the Montgomery Theatre, opens June 20 with performances of the beloved author’s inspirations, such as “The Wind in the Willows” and “The Importance of Being Earnest.”

Manitoba

For families who are looking to chill out for a couple of days this summer there is the Yoga Canoe Weekend taking place in Manitoba’s Whiteshell Provincial Park, a 90-minute drive east from Winnipeg.

The two-night adventure is priced at $196 per person per night and includes a Friday afternoon hike to a backwoods campsite (you’ll be navigating by canoe around several of the park’s 200 glacier-dug natural lakes) followed by a Saturday morning meditation and yoga session in the outdoors, where an instructor will lead you through hatha postures. You’ll have four yoga classes in all, each about two hours long.

The package price includes all meals, a tent for two and plenty of free time for reading, hiking, swimming, and more exploring by canoe. The package is being offered during the weekends of July 25-27, August 22-24, and September 5-7, 2008.

Calgary

From July 4-13th Calgary turns into a scene from a classic western. The 10-day Calgary Stampede is a massive western showcase that takes place in the province of Alberta (about a five-hour drive north from Great Falls, Montana). The annual festival features rodeo competitions, thrill rides, musical entertainment, chuck-wagon races, and an Indian Village. Last year, the event drew more than a million visitors. While several ticket packages for the Stampede are available, the cheapest will run you about $156 per person for a rodeo ticket, park admission, and souvenirs.
