Did you ever notice that even the simplest things can be made into something expensive? Let me give you an example. What about the “shape-up” shoes or other similar types of shoes that claim to help you lose weight while you walk?
While a good pair of shoes does make a difference, I find it interesting that a pair of shoes that costs well over $100 can make such a claim. Now if you own a pair don’t get ready to send me a note about how great the shoes are. I’m not saying they aren’t great.
All I am saying is that to turn a free form of exercise into a moneymaking scheme isn’t right. Suddenly we are left to wonder if we really won’t lose weight unless we have those expensive shoes.
It’s not just with shoes. If you are looking for workout clothes you may be shocked at the price tag. Why is fitness made into such an expense?
I guess what I don’t understand is we complain about the amount of money our healthcare industry spends every year on treating medical problems that are due to obesity. Yet we make living a healthier lifestyle more expensive than it needs to be.
Why do so many people opt for something on the dollar menu, rather than a salad? It’s cheaper to eat greasier food.
If you don’t believe me, try this for a challenge. One week buy a week’s worth of processed, packaged foods that the typical American eats. Save your receipt. The following week buy a week’s worth of healthy foods. Get ready to be sticker shocked. It is very costly to eat healthy.
The reality is that it can be expensive to keep fit. If the products aren’t already expensive, then we create products that are expensive and claim to be the only way to get fit.
It may not be easy to keep fit while saving some money but there are some things you can skip, like special shoes or workout outfits. Fitness is more about commonsense than spending the almighty dollar.
