Why Exercise At All?

This is a question that everyone asks himself or herself sooner or later. We may ask ourselves this when we’re tired, we’re overwhelmed, we’re stressed or when we’re just getting busier and busier. The thing is, the times when we ask the question: why exercise at all? is usually the time we need to exercise most of all.

We Exercise for a Variety of Reasons

Our reasons for exercising are as varied as the individuals who exercise. So if there are a variety of reasons, the important thing to ask yourself right now is what do you value most in life? What is important to you? One of the most important things in my life is being a good mom, being healthy and being there for my daughter in every way that I can be – physically, mentally and emotionally. Exercise is essential for me to be a good mother because not only does it set a good example for my child, it also keeps me in good mental and physical shape so I can do things with her and keep up with her.

This paid off for me last year in more ways than I can count when we took our daughter to Disney World. My endurance levels were high and when we went all day at the parks, I didn’t need to rest near as often as I might have and I didn’t suffer the muscle fatigue that I might otherwise have.

Value in Life

Among the ideas that we value in life include:

  • Family
  • Health
  • Divinity
  • Work Ethic
  • Financial Security
  • Enjoying Life

When you know what it is you value, you can incorporate that value into your commitment to fitness. A personal trainer I know, pursued her career as a personal trainer because she valued her relationship with the divine. She truly believed the body was a temple and that by caring for it, keeping it in shape and helping others do the same – she was honoring her commitment and relationship to God.

The thing is – what you value most in life is going to help you achieve your commitments and your goals more than just saying you “want to get in shape” or “lose weight.” Sure, you want to do those things, but the why is vital to your success in fitness and exercise – especially when you’re tired, stressed, overwhelmed and busy.

So tell me, what do you value most and how does that inspire you to exercise?
