Starting a home – based business can be a great thing for almost anyone, but there are a few types of people who stand to gain even more by starting one. If you are retired or are retiring soon, or if you are a parent who stays home with the kids or wants to stay home with the kids, there are numerous advantages to having a home – based business or working at a home – based job. Today I would like to mention some of the ways that home – based work is especially well suited for retirees and for parents.
Retirement is a bittersweet subject in these tough economic times. With social security seeming increasingly insecure and income from retirement savings and pensions not stretching as far as you might like it to due to inflation, many retirees are concerned about whether they will be able to meet their basic needs, let alone have all of that fun that one is supposed to have when one retires. Retirees make great entrepreneurs because of the depth of work experience that they have acquired throughout their working lives.
Imagine the possibilities – you can choose whether to use your established skill set to do something like teaching or consulting or to try something entirely new like crafting or woodworking which has always appealed to you. You can set up your business in a way that makes sense for you. If you are accustomed to getting up early, you can schedule your work time for the mornings. If you were looking forward to sleeping in more than only on the weekends, your schedule can reflect that too. Love to ski? Work more in the summer and less during the winter. Perhaps golf is more of your thing. You can fill your schedule for the winter and schedule summer work in a way that fits your league and tournament schedule. Whether your passions include grandchildren, gardening, hiking, or anything else, if you have a home – based business you can design a schedule to accommodate those things.
Parents can also use the flexibility of a home – based business to help them do things that they would like to do. Some families feel that it is important to have a parent stay home with the children, especially when they are young. Of course, that is often easier said than done because one income can only stretch so far. A home – based business with a flexible schedule can help these families to meet their economic needs. As the needs of the children change over time, the parent who is working from home can adapt their work schedule. For families with school age children, the home – based professional parent’s schedule can even be tailored to enable them to care for their children during summer vacation and school breaks while possibly even getting a little work done during those times.
Retirees and parents are just two types of people for whom having a home – based business can have significant advantages. Think about how these advantages could translate into your own life. Could a home – based business help you to have more of whatever it is that you would like?
