Joining a health club should seem like a no brainer, right? After all, we can agree that getting in shape and staying in shape is the way to go, right? So if we know this and we can agree on this, then why is joining a health club so hard? We all exercise in different ways, we all embrace different forms of cardio and we’re all stimulated by different things – if a health club offers us what we like or what we want to do – how come it’s still so hard?
Well, for some of us – the reason is cost. Health clubs can be pretty expensive between their membership enrollment fees and monthly dues and yearly contracts. Sometimes they charge extra for group fitness classes and most gyms cost you more per hour for the personal trainer.
For others, it’s the time you have to spend there. If the location isn’t close to your work or your home, you actually have to drive out of your way to get there. The type of membership may limit your hours in the club – with the most expensive membership getting the most access and the limited memberships restricting you to only certain hours you can use the club.
Still others may not be comfortable working out in a setting that is populated by strangers. It can make some people very self-conscious to work out next to another person. They can feel pressured by the staff and the classes and the clothes and the atmosphere. They may want to find their physical fitness elsewhere, but not sure how to do it or how to maintain it outside of the geography inside a health club.
Health clubs can be a great inspiration to you to keep you motivated and on track with your fitness. They can also be intimidating and overwhelming and annoying. They can cost a lot of money and if you aren’t spending enough time – you can start to hate the cost versus the result and sabotage your own fitness.
So – if you were wondering – that’s why it’s so hard to join a health club and that’s okay. They aren’t for everyone – some people do great in a health club and some people do better on their own or working with a personal trainer. The truth is – there is no one perfect way for everyone.
