If you are expecting a baby, then you may be wondering about cesarean sections or c-sections. This is a form of child birth that may be required for your delivery. There are several reasons why you might need a cesarean section. Let us take a look at them and remember to always talk to your doctor about any delivery options that you might be facing.
Choosing a Cesarean
Depending on your doctor, you may be given the option to choose a cesarean instead of a vaginal delivery. Some women decide on this option because they want to schedule the birth for a certain day or avoid vaginal injury. Most doctors recommend against non medical cesareans, so do your research carefully before you make your decision as to the best delivery option for you.
Pre-Existing Conditions
Some pre-existing conditions recommend having a scheduled c-section, such as if the mom has had a previous c-section. Other conditions that may result in a c-section include a placenta that is over the opening of the womb, a very large baby, a multiple birth or a baby that is breech and cannot be encouraged to turn.
These are pre-existing conditions that are generally known before a woman goes into labor, and so the c-section can be scheduled.
Emergency or Urgent Cesarean
Sometimes issues will develop during labor that will make a cesarean necessary and urgent. Serious medical conditions can develop. Some typical scenarios that would indicate an emergency c-section include severe high blood pressure, a serious change in your baby’s heart rate pattern or if your labor has stopped or slowed.
If you do have a c-section, know that surgical complications are not common and recovery can be quick. If there are no complications, you will be released from the hospital in two to four days.
