Why Murphy Likes Grommit

Not too long ago I finally got to see a movie I’d had in my Netflix queue for far too long: Wallace and Grommit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit.

In case you’re not familiar with the clay-mation duo, Wallace is a man and Grommit is his dog. But Grommit is so much more than just Wallace’s best friend. He helps Wallace with everything, from getting up and dressed in the morning to chores to helping run their business.

Now normally I ban myself from watching movies with animals, but I forgot about this one exception. (Yes, even cartoony animals can get to me.) But the first time I saw a Wallace and Grommit short I was smitten. I was very excited when they released The Curse of the Were-Rabbit in theaters because it was their first movie and I was sure it’d be good. I just never had a chance to go see it.

Anyway, I finally rented it and it was every bit as good as I hoped. It was great, in fact. It’s my new favorite Wallace and Grommit adventure. But I wasn’t the only one who liked it. So did Murph!

He liked Grommit because:

(1) Grommit got to be around a LOT of rabbits due to the business he helped Wallace run. (Anti-Pesto Pest Control, a humane pest removal service.) But Wallace and Grommit didn’t kill them. They removed them from their client’s property then stored them in their basement, kind of like pets. They were a little different looking than the ones he’s used to, but they were bunnies just the same. And if there’s one thing Murph’s nuts for, it’s dem dar rabbits!

(2) Grommit got to be around a lot of carrots, because since him and Wallace kept the rabbits they had to feed them too. (Carrots happen to be one of Murph’s favorite treats.)

(3) Grommit got to drive a car. And fly a plane. (Murph goes a lot of places but always in the passenger’s seat, never the driver’s.)

(4) Grommit proved time and time again how smart he was by figuring out who the were-rabbit was, how it came to be, and how he had to reverse it. (Murph’s pretty sure if Grommit took the Pooch IQ test he’d score at the Genius level easy. Heck, he could even give himself the test…no human helpers needed!)

(5) In the end, Grommit saved the day. (Murph’s all for a good hero story!)

Side Note

I’m not kidding when I say the movie’s good. It won the Academy Award for Best Animated Film in 2005. Very deservedly so!
