No one likes to be stuck in an airport when they should be somewhere over the Pacific. But according to a recent survey, if you have to be delayed anywhere, it’s best to be held up at the Hong Kong International Airport.
For the seventh year in a row, the massive airport was ranked the best by millions of passengers around the world. Visitors chose the Hong Kong International Airport over 190 others in an annual survey conducted by Skytrax, a privately owned research company.
The London-based firm reportedly collected more than 8 million questionnaires from travelers flying into and out of airports around the globe over a 10-month time period from 2007 to 2008. Respondents judged each airport on items such as shopping, dining, staff courtesy, baggage delivery and wait times at security checkpoints.
According to the survey results, airports in Asia scored the highest. While Hong Kong led all airports for its efficiency and comfort, Singapore and Seoul, South Korea came in second and third, respectively. Other Asian airports making the Top 10 include Kansai, Japan and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
European airports, including Munich, Germany; Copenhagen, Denmark; Zurich, Switzerland; and Helsinki, Finland filled out the Top 10 with Cape Town, South Africa rounding out the list at No. 10.
Noticeably missing from the top tier of the list were airports located in the United States. While none of them cracked the Top 10, airports in San Francisco, Denver, Dallas and Atlanta improved slightly in their rankings over last year, coming in between 11 and 25.
If you find yourself delayed at Munich’s airport you can kill time by playing a round of miniature golf, or by catching a movie in the airport’s 60-seat cinema. The airport also boasts cosmetic and physiotherapy services, along with other cutting-edge amenities. If you are traveling with children, the airport has something to keep them busy as well. Munich’s airport is equipped with educational experiences like behind-the-scenes tours and “kinderterminals,” a touch screen that allows children to learn more about how an airport works.
