What does “comp” mean? It stands for complimentary and is usually used to indicate free or discounted products or services, such as when a resort “comps” dinner for a repeat guest or provides free services to a company that uses a particular hotel for all its business lodging.
Another way to receive comps is to agree to visit a timeshare under certain programs. You’ll usually get your choice of free meals or free tickets to a concert, show, or theme park. It’s a great way to stretch your vacation dollars. You do have to participate in the timeshare seminar, but who knows, you might find a great deal on a shared condo for future vacations. *You should only do this if you are willing to at least consider a timeshare arrangement.
You may be aware that bus drivers receive free meals at many restaurants when they bring in a busload of customers. If you are planning an event and bringing a group with you to a restaurant or other establishment, make sure you ask about discounts.
Another form of comp is offered by some stores, such as super centers like Wal-Mart (check with your local store to make sure it is a participating location). The way it works is when you find an item on sale for a lower price than Wal-Mart is charging, you bring in the ad and Wal-Mart will give you that item at the competitor’s price. It must be exactly the same item, the same brand, the same size, the same flavor, etc. Still, you can save a lot of money on groceries and other household products if you watch the sale papers and compare. You’ll save money on gas as well, because you won’t be running from store to store to get the best prices.
Check sale adds, mark each item (where it is on sale and for how much) as you make your shopping list. It helps speed up the check out process if you also circle the items in the sale paper so you can find them easily.
