Most of the people I know approach reading the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible, Genesis-Deuteronomy) with one of two feelings. Either they dread reading it, but do so out of a sense of obligation, or they start off determined to “just get through it”, and end up quitting somewhere in the middle of Leviticus.
Genesis is usually pretty good reading, it is filled with many famous stories such as the Creation, Cain and Abel, Isaac and Rebekah, Jacob and Esau and of course, Joseph and his coat of many colors. Even Exodus is pretty interesting with God bringing the plagues against Egypt, the parting of the Red Sea, and the giving of the Ten Commandments. Towards the end of Exodus, the narrative slows down as God gives detailed instructions regarding the building of the Tabernacle. Once the reader gets to Leviticus, the action sequence seems to come to a screeching halt. Now the reader is presented with chapter after chapter of the technicalities of offering sacrifices and all of the specifics of the laws of God. It is easy to become discouraged and give up your pursuit of the Pentateuch when presented with reading that may be considered a little “dry”. I believe this is a big mistake. Though a few of the first books of the Bible may not be captivating or very easily applied, in them are contained some of the richest insights into the character of God and the way He interacts with His people.
Deuteronomy 8:4 says that “…man doth not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of the LORD doth man live.” These words are echoed by Jesus in the Gospels. The historical books and poetical books of the Old Testament are not the only ones which are inspired of God and from which we can gain spiritual truth. Jesus said that every word of God is profitable for us and in order for us to be able to profit from them, we need to read them.
