Why don’t we need signs and wonders to prove where we stand with God? Won’t they make us more spiritual or a better class of Christian? No. Because God has given us all we need for the Christian life Colossians tells us.
What has he given us exactly? If we have accepted Jesus God has ‘qualified us’ just as he did the Colossian Christians ‘to share in the inheritance of the saints of light,’ Colossians 1:12. God had ‘delivered us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son,’ Colossians 1:13. It is through Jesus that we have ‘redemption, the forgiveness of sins,’ Colossians 1:14.
So God has given us all we need. We don’t need signs and wonders. If God grants them to us, fine. We can thank God for them. But we don’t need them. We have all we need because of what God has done for us through Jesus. Having a true experience of God will drive us not to seek signs and wonders but to drive us to faith in Jesus.
I’ve known and heard of people who claim to have had an experience or vision of God. But if it hasn’t driven them towards Jesus and also made them more aware of sin in their lives, thereby changing the way they live, it is worthless. The thing is as we connect with Him it should also produce an awareness of our own sin. We should be seeking to make our lives more godly according to His Word and more pleasing to Him.
So, how can you know you are truly connected to God?
1. You will be trusting in Jesus.
2. You will be growing in godliness and your relationship with Him
3. You will have more awareness of your own sin
Next time we will look more at some of the defining marks of those who have had a real experience of God.
