A Georgia Family recently questioned why their baby had a persistant cough. They had a suspicion that the new furniture was the culprit. They had it tested, and they were right.
Formaldehyde and other toxic chemicals used in the making of pressed wood furniture can poision the air. When a child spend 18 hours a day sleeping in that room, it can make them very sick.
Parents already are educated on the fact that crib slats hould be no more than 2 3/8 inches apart and that the matress should fit tightly. They assume, however that if the crib is for sale, that it fits standard guidelines and is safe. Unfortunately, there are no guidelines that dictuate teh type of wood that should be used on a crib.
When buying furniture for babies, parents need to be aware of air quality. According to gonaturalbaby.com, “What you put in your nursery is yet another cause of concern. When picking our nursery furniture, make sure you aren’t choosing products with formaldehyde. According to the EPA, formaldehyde is a “colorless, pungent-smelling gas (that) can cause watery eyes, burning sensations in the eyes, and throat, nose, nausea, and difficulty in breathing.” The reports go on to show that it has been shown to cause cancer in animals and high concentrations of it may trigger attacks in people with asthma.”
The best furniture for a baby’s room would be real wood furniture. Real wood baby furniture is environmentally conscoius, lasts for generations, and will not emit fumes that can hurt your baby.
Sure it will cost a little more, but it is also more valuable. Where a pressed wood crib can last a few years, real wood furniture can last for decades, saving you and your family members a great deal of money. In addition, knowing that your baby can sleep at night without being in danger of developing asthma or even cancer based on your choice of baby furniture.
