The topic of detoxifying tends to polarize people. Some people swear by it while other swear about it. I hope to help you out here in case you’ve been wondering what all the fuss is about when it comes to the detox.
I published a blog on the Master Cleanse some time ago. It has been particularly popular with those looking to lose a few fast pounds but I’ve tried to be absolutely clear that this is not a quick fix meant for the yo-yo dieter. While one of the side effects is usually weight loss, doing a detox like the Master Cleanse can be very good for you physically, spiritually and emotionally.
The human body is an amazing machine and capable of dealing with all manner of toxins. If you think about the foods, additives, medications and all the other things that we ingest you have to marvel at the body’s ability to recover! Doing a detox once or twice a year can give your body a break. The body puts a lot of energy into the process of eating, digesting and passing what we consume. A detoxification eliminates this process from the equation and frees up much needed energy for cleansing of the system. Think of it this way: it is good for your plumbing system if you drop some Liquid Plumr down the bathtub drain every few months so wouldn’t it make sense that your human plumbing might need the same sort of thing?
We have organs that are meant specifically for cleansing like the digestive tract, the urinary system, the skin, and the liver. Few people think about all that the liver does for them. Believe it or not, it balances cholesterol, processes proteins, makes bile to help with fat digestion, activates hormones and stores vitamins. It is also clears our system of chemicals that we come in contact with like alcohol, cigarette smoke, and household chemicals. Some symptoms of poor liver function include tiredness, dark circles under eyes, poor digestion and dull skin.
Many people use their time on a detox or fast (a detox is not necessarily a fast) to reflect on their faith or just on their life in general. The time that they don’t have to spend on meal preparation and eating can allow them more time to themselves and the physical cleansing facilitates a positive environment for spiritual and emotional change.
Whatever your reason for detoxifying your body, please remember to do it properly and safely. While the human body can survive for quite some time without food, foolishly eliminating water can kill you. As always, consult with your physician on the specific detox regimen you plan to use prior to using it.
