Wild and Wacky Travel Fun

Have you ever wondered where you could go to see a pumpkin being launched thousands of feet in the air? Or where you could sink your teeth into the world’s largest omelet? Well, wonder no more. I’ve tracked down some of the country’s most outlandish travel attractions that are made only better when people from around the world visit them on their family vacation.

DELAWARE

Each year Sussex County, Delaware hosts the World Championship Punkin Chunkin celebration. From October 31-November 2, 2008 you can watch as helmet-wearing participants load pumpkins into homemade cannons in the hopes of launching the orange fruit thousands of feet in the air.

LOUISIANA

The Giant Omelette Celebration in Abbeville, Louisiana started when three members of the local chamber of commerce traveled to France to attend the Easter Omelette Festival in Bessieres. That was back in 1984 and since then Abbeville has been one of seven cities worldwide to host an annual omelette festival. Representatives from each city are on hand to help local chefs prepare the celebration’s main attraction—a 5,000-egg Cajun omelette. This year’s event takes place from November 1-2.

ALASKA

Attention single women over the age of 21… if you have ever dreamed of landing a handsome mate from the 49th state then head to the Wilderness Woman Contest in Talkeetna. The event takes place on December 6, 2008 and tests the mettle of females from around the globe who can haul firewood, fetch water, shoot ptarmigan, open beer cans, and perform other tasks vital to surviving married life on the frontier. The annual event is sponsored by the Talkeetna Bachelor Society and attracts thousands to the area each year.

ARIZONA

Each January Oatman, Arizona becomes the scene of one of the wackiest races known to man. The Oatman Bed Races pit teams of five (two to push, two to pull, one to sit) sporting pajamas or outlandish costumes in a competition to see who can best maneuver their bed through an obstacle course in the middle of town. The city was once home to gold miners, but it’s now a tourist trap with daily shoot-outs and a herd of burros that wanders the streets looking to be fed. Burro braying contests, a pot-banging parade, and a toilet-seat toss make this event one of the wackiest in the world.
