Winter Adventure Travel Packages—Europe

I’ve covered winter sports options in Vermont, Minnesota, Colorado, New England and Canada. But, if you are looking to explore the great outdoors in a place known for having the world’s most spectacular mountain scenery then consider this next travel package.

I am continuing my series of blogs spotlighting various destinations for winter sports enthusiasts by focusing on U.K.-based Exodus Travels’ “Winter Activity Week” tours. For about $1,500 you can enjoy eight days and seven nights of pure winter sports bliss. From snowshoeing and dogsledding to skiing and ice-skating this tour provides a smorgasbord of winter activities in venues with unparalleled beauty.

Exodus offers winter tours in Finland, Sweden, Norway, Switzerland, Iceland, and Slovenia, but its “Winter Activity Week” tour, centered around Mont Blanc (which straddles the borders of France, Italy, and Switzerland) offers the most bang for your buck.

The tour takes you to the resort town of Chamonix, France, which will be your base for six full days of winter activities. During that time you can choose from a variety of guided excursions, including cross-country skiing in the Italian Ferret Valley, dogsledding in the Chamonix Valley, snowshoeing around Le Prarion, and skate-skiing and Nordic walking in the Italian Aosta.

There are two free days in the middle of the trip for pursuing other activities. During the break you could try ice climbing, glacier walking, or even tandem paragliding in Chamonix. Tour operators also highly recommend using the downtime to ride Europe’s highest cable car from Chamonix to the summit of Aiguille du Midi.

The tour’s start dates are December 23, 2007, January 13, February 24, March 9, and December 21, 2008. The $1,500 price tag includes hotel accommodations, most meals, transportation during the tour, and guide fees. Some meals, optional activities, airfare to Geneva (where the nearest major airport is located), and transportation from Geneva, Switzerland to Chamonix, France are extra.
