Winter Adventure Travel Packages—Yellowstone

You’ll never convince my brother that bird watching is a sport (my mom’s cousin tried for 3-hours one Easter to no avail). But, what about wolf watching? Some nature enthusiasts consider it the ideal winter sporting event and the trend appears to be catching on.

As I continue my series of blogs spotlighting various tours for those of you who don’t mind braving the frigid temperatures to spend time in the great outdoors, I’m focusing on Yellowstone National Park. The world-renown park is the site of a unique travel package being offered by the Yellowstone Association. The non-profit organization runs educational programs within the park, including a winter “lodging and learning” program.

For about $700 you can participate in the group’s four-night Winter Rendezvous package, a program designed to give guests multiple ways to experience Yellowstone’s off-season. Most people know Yellowstone as a prime summertime destination (on average it hosts 2 million visitors during the months of June, July, and August). But, by early November, most of the park’s roads and facilities close for the season and visitor numbers drop way off.

Hence this fabulous winter deal. The package includes exclusive use of the Mammoth Hot Springs Hotel, the only in-park accommodations accessible by car during the winter. In addition, each day you’ll be able to choose one of several guided field trips, with options ranging from wolf tracking and cross-country ski lessons to snowshoeing and ice climbing. You’ll wrap up each day with the rest of your group at a buffet dinner followed by trip reports and an educational presentation by a wildlife biologist, park historian, or another Yellowstone expert.

I should note that the program is only being offered during the month of March. The $700 price tag includes accommodations, buffet breakfast and dinners, box lunches, guides and guest speakers, in-park transportation, and daily activities. Gratuities and transportation to Yellowstone are not included.
