The Word of Wisdom outlines things that we can do to better care for our bodies. While the Word of Wisdom outlines many things that we should not take into our bodies (tea, coffee, alcohol, and smoking), it also suggests things that we should be doing to better care for our bodies. There is something about the winter months that seem to make it more difficult to focus on caring for our bodies. The Word of Wisdom emphasizes the importance of eating well. Here are five things you can do in the winter to help you follow the spirit of the Word of Wisdom.
1) Spend time outside everyday. Many people suffer from the lack of sunlight. This can actually cause seasonal depression. Just spending ten minutes outside soaking up the sun will make a huge difference in how you feel and your energy level. Your children will benefit from the exposure as well.
2) Winter is a time when you crave the comfort foods, try to find healthier alternatives to these items. You can add fruits and vegetables as side items to every meal. You can also make the switch to whole grains instead of processed foods. These things will help you to eat the way that the Word of Wisdom counsels us to eat.
3) Exercise on a regular basis. Often the cold detracts us from our regular workout, but it is important to continue to exercise. You may consider running at a different time of day or switching your winter workouts inside. The exercise will make a big difference in how you feel both physically and mentally.
4) Make sure that you are getting enough sleep. This is especially important in the winter months, when there are so many viruses and germs being passed around. If you are not getting enough sleep you are weakening your immune system. Your mood will improve if you can get enough sleep as well.
5) Finally don’t forget to nourish yourself spiritually. Take time to study the scriptures and meditate on a daily basis. This will help you to find peace. Once you have that peace you will be able to more fully focus on the things around you that need your immediate attention.
