With the euro pummeling the dollar it’s not hard to see why many American tourists are staying closer to home this winter season. However, if you are dying to visit Europe and want to do so without having to battle massive crowds, then now is the time to go.
Winter is an especially good time to visit Rome. The hordes of tourists are minimal and the weather is cool but comfortable with daytime temps in the 50s, which is balmy compared to some locations in northern Europe.

In January and February the city hosts “Le Saldi,” which is a huge biannual clothing sale that takes place at designer and mainstream boutiques across Rome. To help encourage snowbirds to take flight to Rome several major carriers are offering winter deals to the city. Currently, round-trip airfare from New York is about $450 per person in January (that’s subject to change, of course). However, better bargains exist if you book a vacation package. BARGAINS IN BEANTOWN
Boston in the winter… I know; the words snowy and cold come to mind. However, there’s plenty to do indoors and you’ll have many attractions all to yourself. If that doesn’t encourage you to visit, perhaps you’ll be swayed by seeing the deals being offered by area hotels and restaurants.
Boston Harbor Hotel is offering a special promotion for this winter’s Boston Wine Festival and Boston Wine Expo. The hotel is hosting the Wine Festival and is giving guests special rate reductions on meals and seminars. Prices vary by event.
In addition, you art lovers stand to save a bundle this winter in Beantown. The Institute for Contemporary Art is letting visitors gaze at dozens of works of art for free each Thursday evening during the winter months. Also, you can get a discount at the villa-like Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts by showing your ticket stub from either one at the respective visitor’s centers.
