Sometimes, I like to get up early on Thanksgiving morning while everyone else is still sound asleep. I quietly make coffee, maybe a specialty flavor, and take a cup outside with me if the weather is mild. I sit and breathe deeply, inhaling fresh air and the aroma of fresh, hot, coffee. I listen to the birds chirp and watch them flutter about the feeder just a few feet from my deck.
I try to clear my mind and keep from becoming distracted by all the things I’ll need to do before long. I think about all the things I’m thankful for, including the opportunity to spend another holiday with the people I love. I say my prayers, giving special thanks not only for so many blessings, but also for much love in my life.
Soon, it will be time to go inside and begin the day. Still, I’ll sit and enjoy these peaceful moments for as long as possible. It’s amazing how much there is to be thankful for when we take a few quiet moments to reflect.
If my family begins to stir, I will head back indoors for kisses, hugs and, “Happy Thanksgiving, Mom!” After that, the holiday begins.
There are certain things that just make a house feel like home, such as the wonderful aroma of lovingly prepared foods, the sounds of children playing and laughing, the silly smile my husband gets on his face when I catch him sneaking a taste of something… the good stuff, the moments that make up memories.
There will also be spills, a few shouts at the TV if there’s a bad call during the football game, and there will probably be at least one thing I forgot to do or buy. That’s okay. These things make up memories too.
Remember, we only have so many holidays in life, so make each one the best it can be. I wish each one of you and your family members hearts filled with love and joy on this Thanksgiving Day.
