Doris Day stars in “With Six You Get Eggroll,” a light-hearted look into what happens when two families try to merge into one. Day is Abby McClure, a youngish widow who is raising three sons with just the help of her housekeeper. In need of a date for a business dinner, she checks out her address book for any likely candidates, coming upon the name of Jake Iverson, an old friend of her husband’s. She’s heard that Jake’s wife died some time before and decides that he’s not a terrible solution to her problem, so she calls him up and he agrees to come, faced with the alternative of a TV dinner.
When Jake (Brian Keith) arrives, everyone assumes he and Abby are an item, and bombard him with questions about their relationship. He makes a fast exit, only to run into Abby later at the grocery store. This time they hit it off, and spent several hours talking, the start of a great relationship.
There’s just one problem. She has three sons, and he has one daughter, Stacey, played by a very young Barbara Hershey. Stacey was close to her mother and resents any implication that her father might remarry, and so Abby and Jake eventually elope, putting an end to the speculation. Now comes the hard part, though – where will they live? Whose room will be whose? And will they be able to make the marriage work?
I enjoyed this comedy. I did wish that they had sat their children down and explained just what was going on, rather than springing the marriage on them like that. A firmer hand was needed in a lot of areas. But if you don’t analyze it too much, you’ll get a kick out of the film.
A funny sidenote: Both Jamie Farr and William Christopher of M*A*S*H fame have cameo appearances.
