Woody Allen apparently does not want his ex-wife and his current wife to meet – at least not in the courts. He has asked a judge to prevent clothing company American Apparel from putting both ex Mia Farrow and current Soon-Yi Previn on the witness stand.
Allen is suing American Apparel for $10 million dollars because they used his image on billboards and a website without his consent. One of the ads included a frame from the movie Annie Hall. In case you were wondering, Allen doesn’t endorse any products in the U.S. The billboards in New York and Hollywood and the website contained Allen’s images for a week.
Among the people American Apparel have planned to summon in addition to Farrow and Previn are Allen’s sister and Larry Flynt, publisher of Hustler magazine. I cannot imagine what Larry Flynt has to do with this other than his groundbreaking case against Jerry Falwell, which went to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court ruled unanimously that the First Amendment, which guarantees free speech, prohibited Falwell from collecting any personal damages compensation from Flynt for his use of Falwell’s image in his magazine.
Anyhow, Allen has said that American Apparel, by calling all these witnesses, is making a “brutish attempt to smear and intimidate” him. Oddly enough, American Apparel’s lawyer, Stuart Slotnick, said that the company intends to bring in both women to prove that Allen’s image is no longer worth the $10 million dollars he is seeking in damages due to controversy involved in both relationships.
In happier news, Maggie Gyllenhaal had added – a husband that is. She and longtime boyfriend actor Peter Sarsgaard married last Saturday in Italy. The wedding, which included guests such as her brother Jake Gyllenhaal and his lady love Reese Witherspoon, took place in Brindisi in a small chapel. Also in attendance was the couple’s 2 ½ year old daughter Ramona.
