We’ve had a few sunny, warm-ish days here—enough to dry up many of the puddles and make at least some of the mud hard enough to walk over. It’s the time of the year when I’m just itching to get outside. I can hear the birds singing, the trees are starting to blossom and while not entirely here, and spring is definitely on the way. When my kids were younger and I had work-from-home work to do, we were inclined to take our work to the park…
Traci has written about working from coffee shops, but if you’ve got young kids under foot or in tow, heading to the park may be a more likely place where the kids can stay busy and within eye sight and you can spread out on a blanket, under a tree, or at a picnic table and get some work done. You can make a picnic of the entire afternoon (regardless of whether you plan a picnic or not, make sure you’ve got snacks and beverages on hand and that you settle near a restroom—otherwise, you’ll find your afternoon is cut short and not very productive) or just go for a morning outing with your work projects.
With the advent of laptop computers, work is even more portable than ever. But, even if you don’t do computer work, you can take portable pieces of work to the park—you can make calls to customers and prospects, you can work on your accounting or bookkeeping, you can write notes and cards, you can develop a marketing plan, business plan or financial plan, or you can take along a notebook and jot ideas and record creative bursts that come to you while sunning yourself in the green park.
So, as the weather warms up and gets nicer, why not pack up some of your “have to do” work and spend a little time working from the park. After all, isn’t that one of the great perks about running your own home business?
