With my first pregnancy, I was just in survival mode. I was working full-time, and just trying to make it through the day each day. I would collapse on the couch exhausted, and just wanted to go to bed at 7pm at night. I did not even think about working out, or exercising during that pregnancy. I was too overwhelmed with just feeling sick, or huge, or not comfortable. I survived that pregnancy just fine, and went on to have a healthy, happy baby.
With my second pregnancy, I decided I would work out more. I went to the gym faithfully, and even had a t-shirt that I wore to work out that said, “Kickin’ 24/7”. Very appropriate for a pregnant momma wouldn’t you say?
Working out each day made me feel so much better. The endorphins alone helped to boost my mood, and make me more positive. I am a miserable pregnant lady. I do not enjoy being pregnant. Not one bit. So, a boost in my mood was definitely helpful. I would recommend a workout routine to anyone that is pregnant.
First, you must always consult your doctor before beginning any sort of workout routine. Especially when pregnant. The last thing you want to do is injure yourself, or the baby, and make yourself even more uncomfortable. Most doctors will tell you that working out is OK. If you are already in the routine of exercise, then you can most likely keep up your same regimen. At least in the beginning. Here are some tips for working out:
*Stretch. This is the best kind of workout you can do when pregnant. Keeping your muscles loose and limber will only help your birthing experience. Take it slow. Many times there are Yoga and Pilates classes for pregnant women. If not, then participate in a regular class and speak to the instructor before class starts. Let her know you are pregnant, and that you would love it if she would suggest some alternate positions for you during the workout. Most instructors are already aware of what you can and can’t do in pregnancy.
*Walk. Getting on a treadmill is also so great for your body. For me, it helped me have more overall stability in my everyday life. Having a pregnant belly can throw off your balance, but if you practice walking with that pregnant belly, you can only get better at it!
*Be Religious. Going to the gym, or for a walk once a week is good, but to get the most benefit out of exercising while pregnant, do it often. Just do not make your workouts too intense. Your pregnant body is capable of great things. The key is to remember to go often, but do not push yourself too hard. You want to be consistent, but be gentle too.
Remember that exercise will help you all around. You will feel better mentally, you will recover faster after childbirth, and you will have an easier time during labor if you are physically fit.
