Someone asked me recently if money were no object (I’m not sure what fantasy planet that would be on), if I would rather have a housekeeper, a nanny, or a cook? I thought it was a fantastically fun question to mull over and thought I’d share it with all of you—if you could have your way, but you had to choose only one, would you rather have a housekeeper, a nanny or a cook?
Since my children are all teenagers, I wasn’t really tempted by the nanny. I don’t know how I would have answered that choice question ten years ago—I think if it was in the midst of a crazy summer, I’d definitely take the nanny. But, now with nearly grown children, my concerns have turned to other domestic matters…
So, I narrowed it down to a choice between the housekeeper and the cook. How lovely it would be to come home to a clean house that I didn’t have to clean! I wouldn’t have to rush around in the early morning hours starting laundry, cleaning up the midnight snack dishes, tidying and stacking and taking out garbage, nor would I have to vacuum myself out the door in the morning in hopes of returning to a reasonably decent home in the evenings. Instead, I could actually have a cup of coffee and read the newspaper (instead of tucking it under my arm to read on my commute). And, there’d be someone else to make sure there were always clean sheets and fresh towels.
On the other hand, a cook would be nice—someone to put together fabulous savory meals so I wouldn’t have to struggle with that daily question, “What’s for dinner?” Although I love to cook, I’m not always in gourmet mood with picky, hungry teens breathing down my neck. Hmmm….cook or housekeeper?
I think I’d have to go with the housekeeper. Maybe if I didn’t have to put so much energy into staying on top of the housework, I’d actually have more time and creativity to make those fabulous savory meals myself. How about you—what would you choose? A housekeeper, a nanny, or a cook?
