I’m all for staying in an affordable, clean hotel room. It doesn’t have to be fancy, but it would be nice if I didn’t have to worry about the roof falling in while I slept. I’m fairly certain all four walls would remain standing with the newest trend in hotel rooms… but then again how many hotel rooms have you stayed in that came out of a box?
Qbic Hotels is introducing low-cost, high design prefabricated rooms that can be plugged into any existing space in any city in the world. Which begs the question: Would you pay to stay in one?
If you answered yes, be prepared to complete your stay with very little assistance. In addition to its unique design, the hotel brings with it an innovative self-service aspect, which begins the moment you check in. You receive an electronic card that’s needed to check in and check out and you are pretty much on your own. Digital lobby kiosks offer information on local attractions and restaurants. While a Grab-and-Go Corner provides food and drinks, toothbrushes, phone cards, and shampoo that you purchase with your electronic card. There is a service manager on location but he/she only appears when a problem arises.
The room itself (called a Cubi) is a pre-assembled, 74-square-foot cube-shaped living area. It is furnished with a bed, a flat-screen TV, high-speed Internet access, and a small workstation. The bathroom boasts a rain shower, and each room has a window view. It may sound basic, but the Cubi offers guests a unique option that doesn’t exist in more luxurious hotels. Qbic gives guests the chance to change the color and theme of their room with a touch of a finger on an LED screen. If you want a pink room or blue sky or orange, you can change the mood of the room.
The rooms range in price from $80 to $200 and are currently available in the Netherlands. The company is looking to expand to Barcelona, Copenhagen, London, Milan, and possibly several large American cities.
