Writing a Primary Program

This weekend was such a great weekend for many reasons. Mainly because it was general conference weekend, and I got to hear some great, spiritually uplifting talks which I will blog more about later. But, I also love the weekend that I get to just hang out all day at home with my family and relax a little from the stress of callings, and making sure everyone gets up and gets to church on time.

But, this weekend, I had a task hanging over my head that I finally completed, and I’m so glad I did! I made it a goal to get our primary program written this weekend. Our program is going to be on November 20th, and now that it is all written, I feel like I can relax a little. Being 8 months pregnant and the primary president is a little tricky at times. But, thankfully, we have a small primary and I was able to sit down and write it out, and receive a little inspiration in the process.

We have 17 kids in our primary. So, I started by making a list of all of their names by class. Then, I began at the beginning of the 2011 Sharing time outline and created lines for each of them using the themes for each week that is outlined by the general primary presidency. As I was writing it, however, I realized something important was missing. The scriptures! And, since the theme for this year is, “I know the Scriptures are True” I felt we had to have the scriptures in there too. So, I came up with an idea to have an older child be the “scripture narrator” throughout the whole program. He will read the scripture that goes along with each month’s theme after songs are sung and before parts are read that correspond to that scripture. It’s a perfect fix!

For the older children, I gave them a few lines to build a 2 minute talk around, but have left the rest up to them to prepare. I think it will be a great program, and I’m really excited about it. This is the first time I’ve ever had to write a primary program, and I’m so thankful for the inspiration of church leaders that give us the Sharing time outline, because it really made it so easy to come up with a part for each child.
