On Monday, Yahoo Inc. announced that it launched a new website geared for women. The new website, called, Shine, will cover such topics as parenting, love, relationships, healthy living, home life, sex, money and career, entertainment, food, fashion, beauty and even astrology. Its target audience is a woman who is between 25 and 54 years of age, a demographic that yahoo’s advertisers may have complained about not reaching with targeted advertising. Women in that age group are considered key decision makers when it comes to purchasing goods and services in the home.
Shine will have to compete with other already established websites for women, such as iVillage. Yahoo is said to be in negotiations with media companies such as Hearst Communications, the publisher magazines, such as Redbook and Cosmopolitan, for exclusive content. Yahoo has also hired a team of editors to produce new content and tie in existing content and products from Yahoo.
Shine is presented in blog form. New stories and content will appear at the top, along with editorial commentary. Recent stories include: Fancy Lingerie You Can Actually Afford an How to Live Well on the Cheap and a feature on Madonna. The format is refreshing and easy to read.
Shine combines this content with tools for communication, such as Yahoo Groups and Yahoo mail.
In other Yahoo news, Microsoft is still standing firm in its bid for a buyout of Yahoo. There are no plans to raise the offer, Microsoft says, which was at $44.6 billion originally, a mix of cash and Microsoft shares. The value of the offer is estimated to have fallen to about $42 billion with a fall in the value of Microsoft shares. Microsoft believes that time is on its side, according to the Wall Street Journal, and will not raise its bid unless serious take over talks are entered into between Microsoft and Yahoo.
Microsoft originally entered its bid on February 1st. Yahoo has since been seeking alternatives to the buyout, although no other offer have materialized. Rival, Google has been somewhat vocal about its reservations concerning the possible take over.
