I blogged awhile back about being prepared for the last storm that hit. Part of the preparation was candles as a backup light source. Yes, we had flashlights, but when it’s 18 degrees out, even that little bit of heat from the candle is most welcome. I love candles. Aside from their practical use for emergencies, the light they give off is very flattering, especially in the face. They hide imperfections well and make wrinkles appear smaller. That’s why it’s a “romantic candlelight dinner” – because we all look better in their light!
We have candles throughout the house. I love to get into a tub of hot water with several candles around the bathroom and just slip away into a peaceful twilight slumber. My children know not to bother me in the bathroom. It’s time I have to myself and I cherish the ability to be alone with my thoughts. The candles add a wonderful ambience to these (now rare) long soaks.
Every once in awhile, we break out the candles for family dinner. Like most families, many of our dinners are eaten far too quickly on our way to Scouting, Gun Club, Choir, or other activities. For some reason, dinner is always at a much more leisurely pace when the candles are center-stage.
For all of these reasons, I was really happy to come across the Yankee Candle clearance sale. These candles burn seemingly forever. This is quality. The jar candles are really nice. A 22 oz one will burn for 110 hours or more. One candle. And they do give off some heat. This is the best bet if you’re buying them for Preparedness. Right now they’re on sale for just $10 apiece. A lot of the scents and colors are gone already, but there are still some good bargains to be had. I actually like the smaller ones better for the bathrooms and living areas, even though you get a little less for the money. They’re on clearance for three for $10, which is still a really good deal.
You can’t compare the prices candle-to-candle with lesser quality ones. Yankee is the standard for the higher end because of their exceptional quality. Their scents actually smell like the object they’re supposed to. No perfumy stuff covering an inferior product. If you order cinnamon, you’ll think something’s baking. If you order chocolate chip cookie, you may just end up with neighborhood kids at the door. To be able to get them for less than half price is exciting to me. But hurry, because once they’re gone, they’re gone.
