With more and more people hosting yard sales and the fall being prime yard sale season, it is important to make sure that your yard sale stands out. With the right staging, everyone will be spending their hard earned money at your sale and not the other ones that are around the corner.
Good yard sale staging takes a lot of cues from the retail industry. After all, marketing professionals have spent billions of dollars trying to figure out what makes people want to spend money. Remember the blog post that I did about how certain smells can influence how much you will spend in a store? Use all of that research to your own advantage in staging a yard sale.
For example, you can play some background music at your sale. Not only will it attract customers to your yard sale, but it will keep them browsing there longer than they might have otherwise. Music can crete a relaxed shopping atmosphere.
Work on the presentation of your goods. Proper display and placement can mean the different between lots of sales and lots of people looking and then walking or driving away. Never place things directly on the ground with only a couple of exceptions. No one wants to have to bend to rummage through things. Instead, place items on tables and clothing hung up on hangers. The two exceptions are toys and children’s books, because having them on the ground will make it easier for kids to find their treasures, and large heavy items, such as furniture.
Offer a bag and box station for customers. If someone can’t carry something then they probably won’t buy it. If you allow customers to pick up a bag or box at the beginning of the sale, they may just find themselves stuffing all sorts of things in it to buy. You’ll probably increase your sales this way.
Good luck with your sale!
