Yo Gabba Gabba!

yoHas a children’s television show ever annoyed you so badly that you wanted to burst into tears? Is that same television show one that your toddler loves? And, is your love for your toddler the only thing keeping you from leaping at the screen, clawing at it with your fingernails, screaming?

This is how I feel about “Yo Gabba Gabba!” a somewhat new children’s television show on Nick Jr. If I didn’t love my three-year-old so much, the show would be banned at my house.

The host is a hyper young man wearing a huge orange wig who goes by the name of DJ Lance Rock. He has five toy monsters that go by the names Brobee, Foofa, Muno, Plex, and TooDee. They come to life and sing and dance.

There are certain regular features on the show. Dancey Dance Time features whacky dance moves exhibited by special guests—Elijah Wood was one such guest a while back. We can also see Cool Tricks, Storytime, Color with Brobee, and Listen with TooDee. The messages are wholesome and the delivery is innocent and gentle. Everyone is kind to each other and they work together to solve problems.

In all fairness, I have tried to figure out just what the appeal is in this show. I can’t tell you. All I know is that my three-year-old loves it. In fact, when I pulled up a website to remind myself of the monsters’ names, he saw the logo on the website and got all excited to watch it.

Perhaps it’s the upbeat music. Perhaps it’s the outrageous costumes. Whatever it may be, the young toddler demographic is being well reached. As far as the parents go – we’ll all take lots of Valium and try to make it through.
