Really, honestly, and truly I read this today. I had always heard that going on a diet, to lose weight, and then to regain it was just a bad proposition. I’ve heard that it makes losing weight for the long haul much harder to do and I’ve heard that it isn’t that healthy for you either, increasing your risk of heart disease, and cancer.
But apparently, losing weight and then regaining has no ill health effects on your heart or your waistline in and of itself. In a research study, following several men and women, statistics showed that yo-yo dieting, or weight cycling as it’s more appropriately referred to, does not increase your tendency to regain the weight. That means, if you struggled with yo-yo diets, you can lose the weight and keep it off.
Another study followed a couple thousand participants comparing those who were first time dieters with those who had gone through the diet regimen up to four times. There were no significant differences in cholesterol, blood pressure, or weight loss.
What you should be worried about, experts say, is excessive weight. Excessive weight gain increases the risk for Type II Diabetes, cancer and heart disease. Consider these statistics:
*Women who are considered morbidly obese are sixty three times more likely to develop Type II Diabetes than those women who are not at all overweight.
*For every 11 pounds of excess weight you carry, you increase your risk of developing cancer by 8%. Endometrial, breast and colon cancer are highly linked to excess weight.
So the good news is that you can pick yourself up and try, try, try again when you are dieting. I highly recommend keeping a journal to analyze why it is that you regain the weight. I mentioned in one of my first blogs here in weight loss how a lack of sleep kills me every time. Figuring out what triggers you to eat excessively or make unhealthy choices will only help you on your goal towards long lasting weight loss.
