Yoga Asanas for Increasing Your Energy Level

Lack of energy is a common complaint among people in our stressed out society. Whether you are a busy mom, working full time or both, lack of rest and low energy levels are common. Fortunately, you don’t need to rely on caffeine; there are specific yoga asanas and types of yoga practice that are beneficial for increasing your energy level.

Mountain Pose – Stand on the mat and breathe with the hands by your sides, rooted in your feet. You can increase the benefit by raising your hands above your head and breathing deeply before returning to center. This helps increase circulation, warms up the body and increases energy flow.

Warrior Poses – The movement and breathing in the warrior poses increase energy flow, improve circulation, and strengthen the legs, arms and abs. For good balance, move through the Warrior poses in a flowing sequence to get the full benefit. Alternatively, you can hold poses for anywhere from 30 seconds to a few minutes, depending on your level of strength and endurance.

Chair Pose – Chair pose is an energy enhancing pose that also builds strength. From a standing position, bend your knees and squat towards a seated position. The hands can be in front of the body or angled up toward the head. Breathe, hold and return to center.

Bridge Pose – This pose is done lying on your back with the knees bent and feet flat on the floor. The hands should be by your side with the palms pointed down. Press the palms down and lift the buttocks. This pose can be held for 30 seconds to three minutes.

Breathing – The movement with breath in your yoga practice will also help you boost your energy level. Deep, regular breathing brings more oxygen to your body and this will help you feel more awake and alive.

In addition to these asanas, there are several types of yoga that have energy boosting benefits. If you want to increase your energy level, try vinyasa, power yoga, Ashtanga or kundalini yoga. There are also yoga practices on DVD that are designed specifically for increasing energy.
