Yoga is gaining popularity among teens and some studios have begun to offer classes designed specifically for teens. There aren’t a lot of DVDs for teens. Most are either geared toward younger kids or adult practices.
There are a few DVD practices for kids, including Yoga 4 Teens. Instructor Christy Brock has created a DVD that offers instruction and a well rounded yoga workout for teen girls. There are no animal sounds or imitations, as is found in many DVDs created for kids.
The DVD contains two tracks. The first is an instructional class. Students are guided through a series of asanas. There are standing poses, backbends, twists, seated poses and more. This portion of the DVD is useful for beginners, so girls won’t feel self conscious doing the practice session.
For each asana in the instructional portion of the DVD, the instructor introduces the pose and describes the benefits. There is information and suggestions for modifying poses throughout the instructional segment. If you are a beginner and want a good description of the asanas, this will be useful.
The second half of the DVD is a yoga practice that is geared for teens and created with their preferences in mind. The practice is fairly vigorous and runs about 30 minutes in length. The practice is fairly well rounded with standing poses, sun salutations, back bends, twists and relaxation. Several poses to tone the abs are included for a total body workout.
The DVD includes a short segment with Do and Don’t information and tips for practicing yoga. Although the tips and instruction are geared to appeal to teens, older women beginning a yoga practice may enjoy it. If you have an older daughter and have wanted to introduce yoga, but think she’d hate the kids’ DVDs, try this one. It could be something you can enjoy together.
