Yoga for Hemorrhoids

Hemorrhoids are a common discomfort during pregnancy, but can happen at any time. The swelling and other symptoms are uncomfortable, embarrassing and can interfere with the quality and enjoyment of your life. If you are looking for a natural hemorrhoid remedy, you can look no further than your yoga mat.

Yoga offers a wide range of physical benefits. Some of the benefits of yoga are also beneficial for hemorrhoids. Many yoga poses work to increase circulation to the anus, aid in digestion to prevent constipation and reduce swelling. Yoga is most effective for relieving hemorrhoids when it is used in combination with a healthy diet, plenty of fluids and rest.

Certain yoga poses offer specific benefits for hemorrhoids. These are poses that take pressure off the affected area, so seated poses may aggravate the condition. Here are a few to try in your regular yoga practice or any time that you need relief.

Child’s pose is effective for reducing symptoms and increasing circulation, which helps to reduce swelling. This resting pose can be a comfortable resting pose and you can stay in it as long as it feels comfortable.

Shoulderstand is an advanced pose that can reduce hemorrhoid symptoms. Inversions should be done with plenty of support and a teacher’s guidance, so skip this one if you haven’t mastered this pose yet. If you are unable to do shoulderstand, try spending time in an inversion sling for similar benefits.

Legs up the wall pose is helpful for improving circulation and reducing hemorrhoid symptoms. This is a relaxing pose that can be done at any level of practice. The posture is done just like it sounds. Put your mat near the wall and lie on your back with your knees bent and your buttocks close to the wall. Straighten your legs and rest them against the wall.
