Yoga for Vertigo

Vertigo is a condition that causes dizziness that is accompanied by a spinning sensation. People with vertigo feel like their body is moving and the room and objects in the area around them are moving as well.

In addition to dizziness, there can be symptoms such as nausea or vomiting and there is an increased risk of injury from falls during bouts of dizziness. There is some evidence that yoga can be an effective tool for managing vertigo.

Vertigo is caused by a problem in the inner ear. The inner ear contains fluid and structures that help with balance and provide information to the brain about motion. When there are disturbances, the information provided is incorrect and results in loss of balance, dizziness and other symptoms of vertigo.

There are other causes of vertigo, including problems with circulation to the brain. This type of vertigo is caused by an underlying health condition, such as anemia or a heart condition. Extreme stress can bring on similar symptoms, as can injuries to the head or ear.

The frequency of symptoms varies widely. For some people, the problem is mild, while others experience serious symptoms that affect their ability to live their lives.

When experiencing vertigo, there are some poses to avoid. Often, people with vertigo will experience symptoms when they bend over to puck up things and may fall over. Other poses to include in your practice for vertigo include plough pose, headstand, shoulderstand, and corpse pose. For real results, you will need to commit to a regular practice. Before attempting to treat vertigo or any condition with natural remedies, check with your doctor to make sure your vertigo is not being caused by an undiagnosed health condition that requires medical attention.
