Yoga offers abundant benefits to people of all ages. The physical and emotional benefits are especially helpful in combating the aches and pains that come with aging and keeping the mind alert and relaxed. However, as we age there are some factors to consider when practicing yoga.
Yoga offers a holistic view to health and wellness that offers specific benefits for disease prevention and retaining flexibility, balance and strength. Some of the benefits for people over the age of 60 include improved circulation, digestion, flexibility and blood pressure.
In terms of disease prevention, yoga offers benefits for a wide range of health conditions, including heart disease, diabetes, arthritis and nearly all degenerative diseases. In addition to physical benefits, yoga improves memory, enhances concentration and focus and relaxes the mind and body.
Yoga is accessible to anyone, regardless of age or fitness level. Some older people have been practicing for years and continue to practice daily, and even teach. Most of the yoga gurus have practiced well into their 70s, 80s and beyond.
Although people who have been practicing for years have better flexibility and balance, anyone can begin to practice yoga and enjoy the benefits and health improvement that comes with the practice, regardless of age. There are some physical conditions that may require modification of the poses, so check with your doctor.
One of the great things about yoga is the asanas can be modified to fit the needs of the individual. Props such as blankets, straps, bolsters and blocks can be used to modify the poses to fit the needs of each person. Some DVD practices for seniors use chairs, walls and other furniture as props to provide additional support.
Balance is important in many yoga asanas, so take it slowly. Get your balance and don’t be afraid to do a modified version of a particular asana or use support, if needed. Trying to push beyond your present capability can result in a fall or other injury. Remember that every person practices at her own pace.
