Yoga Props: Inversion Slings

Inversions such as shoulderstand and headstand are considered by many to be the pinnacle of a yoga practice. Not only are they pretty impressive, but inversions offer abundant health benefits, such as enhancing a feeling of well being, improving circulation and calming the mood.

Although the inversions are beneficial, they are extremely challenging. These are not asanas that will be mastered in a class or two. There are many stops along the way. For example, most people start with poses such as feet up the wall pose, which offer support in the pose.

Props are often used to provide support as the individual student learns to master the poses. Straps and folded blankets are commonly used when first practicing inversions. A blanket offers cushion under the head and prevents neck strain in shoulderstand.

There are some contraindications for inversions. Some are temporary, such as the advice to avoid inversions during menstruation. Others are long term challenges, such as neck and back problems. However, in many cases, people can still enjoy the benefits of inversions without the pain.

One alternative to inversions is the use of a prop known as an inversion sling. The sling eliminates pressure in the neck area, which can aggravate neck and back pain. Because the pressure is relieved, you can relax in the asana.

There are several types of inversion slings on the market. While each has slightly different features, most work in a similar way. The sling goes around the hips and supports you in the inverted position.

Some people find relief from recurring low back and neck pain with regular use of an inversion sling. The relief comes from the effect of the inversion on the spine. The spine is lengthened in these asanas through gravity, which results in more space between the vertebrae.

Back and neck pain isn’t the only reason people choose to buy inversion slings. Many people use them when first attempting inversions. The sling offers support in the pose and allows you to relax. Over time, these people learn to perform the inversions without the support of the sling.

If you are considering purchasing an inversion sling because you are experiencing lower back or neck pain, speak to your health care provider. You want to make sure the source of the pain is properly diagnosed and take any precautions recommended by your doctor during your practice. For serious cases, a yoga therapist may help.
