Yoga Types: Fitness Yoga

Fitness yoga is a term often used to describe the yoga classes generally found in gyms and fitness centers. There are many differences from these yoga classes and the more traditional forms of yoga.

Although fitness yoga classes vary from place to place, and even from one instructor to the next, there are some similarities among these classes. One difference is the practice. The class is generally about an hour long and focuses on poses designed to tone the body and help you lose weight.

Another difference is that fitness classes have a less relaxing environment than a yoga studio, which is designed to facilitate relaxation with dimmer lighting and a quieter environment. In the gym, there are bright lights and the noises of people working out and maybe even the aerobics class next door.

The type of yoga that is best varies according to the individual and your motivation for taking a yoga class. If you are interested in the health and fitness benefits of yoga, but don’t want the reflective or spiritual side, a fitness yoga class at the gym may be the perfect choice.

Keep in mind that when you take fitness yoga classes there may not be props available for students. You will most likely need to bring your own yoga mat and any props you may need, such as blocks, straps or a blanket. You can ask what you should bring before attending for the first time.

You may want to try the class before you spend big money on a gym membership, only to discover you don’t like it. Try a class in a few different gyms to see the differences and help you select the one that is the best fit for you. Most gyms allow you to take a single class for a fee and some may even offer a trial class at no cost. Call your local gyms and fitness centers to find out what is available in your area.
