Yoga Types: Purna Yoga

Purna yoga was developed by Aadil Palkhivala and Mirra and is an integrated system of yoga that is based on ancient yoga philosophy. The definition of purna is complete and that is a fair description of the philosophy of this type of yoga. Purna yoga is based on the teachings of the Vedas, Iyengar, and Patanjali and includes elements and principles of Ayurvedic and Chinese nutrition philosophy.

The system is far more than the physical exercise of the yoga asanas and includes other elements that include meditation, pranayama breathing exercises and overall nutrition, health and lifestyle choices that reflect the natural and balanced lifestyle of yoga.

The meditation in Purna yoga is designed to enhance the connection of the body, mind and spirit. The meditation focuses on opening the heart chakra, which is said to be the seat of the soul and uniting the body, mind and heart. Chanting of a mantra, typically Om is often used during this yoga practice.

The physical practice of the asanas and pranayama breathing was developed based on BKS Iyengar’s yoga system. The practice and use of the asanas is very similar to what would be found in a hatha class based on Iyengar’s teaching. The asanas are integrated with breath to provide the full range of physical, emotional and spiritual benefits of the practice of yoga.

Because Purna or “complete” yoga is an integrated system that is designed to permeate all areas of life, there are nutritional and lifestyle practices that most students of this form of yoga integrate into their lives. There is an emphasis on nutrition, including organic foods, whole foods and natural foods, rather than processed food, fast food and junk.

There are a few other lifestyle practices that are encouraged with Purna yoga. Natural living is emphasized and includes avoiding environmental toxins and creating a natural and healthy environment in your home. In addition, cleansing and detoxifying the body to eliminate toxins is encouraged.
