Yoga Types: Viniyoga

Viniyoga is a gentle form of yoga that was developed by Sri T. Krishnamacharya. In Sanskrit, viniyoga means separation or adaptation. This is a gentle form of hatha yoga that is designed to help the individual develop a system of practice that is tailored to the needs and current level of that student.

What really makes viniyoga different from other forms of hatha yoga and other types of yoga is the focus on the needs of the individual. This form of yoga focuses on bringing out the best in the individual. The goals vary for each person and the yoga practice is adapted to the needs of that person.

There is more to Viniyoga than the physical practice of the asanas. This form of yoga includes pranayama breathing exercises, chanting, meditation and study, in addition to the physical practice of the asanas, although asana is an important part of the practice.

In this form of yoga, the practice of the asanas is done a little differently than in other classes. The asanas are held and there is a higher degree of repetition moving in and out of the asanas in the class. The asanas are adapted for the individual, depending on the effect the person is hoping to achieve.

What really makes this form of yoga unique is the science used in adapting the practice to meet the needs of any individual or group. This ranges from yoga therapy practice for people recovering from injury to a more intense practice for athletes in training and a custom practice for anyone in between.
