Vinyasa flow yoga is a term that is commonly used in a range of yoga classes. These classes are not merely stretching and slowly moving into the poses. These classes use movement from one pose to another in a flowing series of motions that is continuous. The movements are connected to the breath in a flow class.
All vinyasa flow classes include flowing series of poses that synchronized to the breath, but there is wide variety in other elements of the classes. One difference is in the speed of the movements. Some classes have a quicker paced flow than others. Some classes include other elements, such as chanting in combination with the breath and movements.
Even the slower flow classes have movement and this makes it a good option for people who have taken a slower stretch yoga class and found it wasn’t for them. If you think yoga is too slow, try a vinyasa class. Many yoga classes designed for weight loss use vinyasa flow yoga.
The vinyasa flow series varies from class to class, but some sequences are commonly found in these classes. One commonly used sequence is the sun salutation and another is the cat-cow. In these sequences, the instructor will give directions for both movement and breath. For example, in cat-cow, the spine is arched and rounded with the inhalation and exhalation.
Because there is great variation among classes, it can be more difficult to randomly choose a vinyasa flow class. If you take one and don’t like it, try another teacher or another studio. Most places will let you pay by the class, so you can try a few before making a decision to buy a membership or pay for a series of classes.
If you practice at home and want to try a vinyasa flow class, there are several DVDs available in this style. The Namaste Yoga practice shown on FitTV on cable or satellite uses a Hatha Vinyasa style of yoga that is really good and won’t cost anything to try. If you use a TV show practice, record it on the DVR before you get out the mat. This allows you to skip through the commercials without so much interruption of the flow.
