You Don’t Have To Gain Weight During The Holidays

You don’t have to gain weight over the holidays. I know it’s hard, what with all the tasting to make sure your dish is just right ,the parties, visiting with family and friends (and sampling at each stop). The pounds seem to attach themselves to your hips and refuse to leave. But you can still enjoy your holiday goodies, if you follow these simple secrets to low-calorie feasting according to LifeScript, a healthy living newsletter.

(1) The day before your holiday feast divide everything you eat in half. Have half a sandwich or half a bagel with cream cheese, for example. By doing so you save about 750 calories.

(2) Don’t starve yourself the morning of the feast or you will end up being hungry, grumpy and will ultimately overeat. Instead, have a sensible breakfast, a light lunch and a healthy snack before the holiday meal.

(3) Eat whatever you want, just eat a small serving instead of a large helping.

(4) Use a smaller plate (a 10 inch as opposed to a 12 inch). The smaller plate tricks your mind into thinking you have more food than you actually do.

(5) Trim hidden fat in your meals. Opt for skinless white meat turkey and sneak in servings of vegetables, for example.

(6) You don’t have to skip dessert- instead grab two forks and share with another family member.

According to the Duke Diet and Fitness Center, the average American gains five pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. And while they acknowledge that trying to lose weight during the holiday season probably is not realistic there are things you can do to maintain your weight. Some of their suggestions include:

(1) Avoid indulging in high-fat fast food during these hectic times. Instead, pre-plan several quick and healthy meals, freeze and reheat as needed.

(2) Eat something before going to an event where alcohol will be served. The effects of alcohol will be felt quicker if you have an empty stomach and can lead to overeating.

(3) Center entertainment around non-food events like ice-skating or singing carols.

(4) If you are going to a party or eating at someone else’s house, offer to bring a favorite low-calorie dish.

(5) Continue to exercise regularly during the holidays.
