Once your son becomes a teacher he will be assigned to be a home teacher. This is a great responsibility and an opportunity for your son to grow and become accustomed to teaching the gospel to others. Often your son’s first companion will be his father. This is not always the case however. No matter who it is, it is a wonderful opportunity for your son. You can help him to begin to fulfill his duty in many ways.
1) It is encouraged that home teachers teach in Sunday dress. This is not always possible, and there may be homes in which families are part members or less active, where it may make the family uncomfortable. You should encourage your son to go home teaching in Sunday attire.
2) Your son should be given the responsibility to teach the lesson. This will most likely happen every other month. Your son’s companion might have him wait a few months until your son is comfortable with the families he will be teaching. As your son prepares the lesson, ask him if he has any questions or needs suggestions on adapting it to younger children. You may offer to have him practice teaching it to you.
3) Be supportive of your son when he goes home teaching. The appointments are usually scheduled in advance, but if your son is like my brother, that doesn’t mean he will have told you about it. Allow your son to go whenever possible. This will show your son the value that you place on home teaching.
Home teaching is a sacred responsibility. Home teachers should be available to help the families that they home teach. It can be a great blessing for your son to see what home teaching entails at a young age. Home teachers report back to the bishop how the family is doing. This helps the bishop to help meet the needs of each family in the ward. Home teaching is also good preparation for a mission. It will help your son become comfortable bearing his testimony in a variety of settings. I hope that you can encourage your son to be an excellent home teacher.
